Bereavement Support

June 30, 2008

Are Bereavement support groups beneficial. I think this depends on the individual and their circumstances.

Bereavement Support Groups

Learn the knowledge you need about bereavement support groups to make the right decision.

As rule of thumb bereavement counseling is not deemed as beneficial during the first 12 months as this is a natural grieving period: The first birthday, Christmas, in fact the first anniversary of everything. Although again it depends on the individual and impending circumstances.

New Depression Treatments

June 29, 2008

There are lots of research into ways to cure depression and there is no 3 minute cure for depression or even free depression treatment, although some do cure depression naturally but the majority, by following prescribed treatment plans for depression.

Some time ago, DHEA (dehydroeplandrosterone) was known as a “youth hormone” thought to heighten energy and libido.  Now comes the possibility that DHEA could be a revolutionary depression treatment used as a depression medication for anyone showing depressive symptoms.

Research published in the Archives of General Medicine found that 90 mg daily of DHEA significantly reduced the symptoms of depressed  patients, even in those who had not responded to depression treatments before.

DHEA is something which the body creates naturally, and has been linked to depression, researchers aren’t sure how the hormone is created. It may be a building block for estrogen and testosterone; which both have mood-altering qualities, or it may boost feel-good brain chemicals like serotonin.

Although very promising results were found in patients suffering depression, this is probably not licensed as yet, as a depression cure.

Please do not rush out to your Doctors and request a prescription as the long term effects are still not known. This drug is still very much in it’s infancy.

Is it Beneficial to suffer in “Suicide Silence”?

June 28, 2008

Whether it’s recent deaths or past deaths, when a loved one commits suicide, relatives, spouses even friends experience a  roller coaster of emotions including grief, guilt, and depression and we can fluctuate between all of these for some time. Research have indicated that some family survivors may have particularly difficult grief reactions (complicated grief) and that counseling can be useful for the treatment of blame, shame, loss and anger which are all symptoms of grief.

Dutch Psychologists recently discovered a grief counseling program for families bereaved by suicide did not necessarily reduce grief or depression, but may help to prevent perceptions of blame among close relatives and spouses. This research is not conclusive and therefore I would state that the effectiveness of counseling is by individual choice.

Counseling had no beneficial effect on complicated grief, suicidal ideation or depression. However, after adjusting for several factors, the researchers did see a trend towards reduced perceptions of being to blame and fewer maladaptive grief reactions in the counseling group compared to the usual care group.

The authors suggest that having a chance in counseling to inform relatives of the psychiatric context in which suicide usually occurs, and reflect on and acknowledge their loved one’s difficulties before the suicide, may have helped relatives to realize that they did nothing wrong, or that they did all they possibly could do.

I will say it again “This research is not conclusive and therefore I would state that counseling efficacy is by individual choice”.

SIDS Sudden Infant death Syndrome

June 27, 2008

SIDS or Sudden infant death syndrome is one of the most devastating experiences any parent could face. There is no single infant death causes or sudden infant death syndrome prevention, which for the bereft can make it all the more unacceptable. Nothing can take away the pain or fill the baby’s place in your heart. But it may help to acknowledge your grief and share feelings with others who’ve had similar losses.

A Spiritual Perspective on Resolving the Grief of Sudden Infant Death

A heart-centred meditation is one spiritual means to help resolve the grief of a child or other loved one’s loss. The following article outlines the ten steps involved in completing such a meditation. It’s important to find social support for your grief. Acknowledging your baby’s death — as well as your lost hopes and dreams for the baby’s future — is an important part of the grieving process. An infant death is traumatic. You may be plagued with anger or guilt. Or perhaps you’re tormented by questions that simply can’t be answered. All of these emotions are NORMAL

SIDS - Sudden Infant Death Syndrome

Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). It’s defined as when as when a baby dies in the first year of life from no apparent cause. The causes still aren’t fully known, but in SIDS deaths, the baby’s recovery mechanisms if deprived of. As time goes on, your grief will begin to fade. Eventually you’ll find it easier to engage in other aspects of life. The first 12 months are the worst in any kind of loss. The first anniversaries without the loved one.

A Breakthrough in SIDS

While finding these two deadly bacteria are dangerous this is only their first step to finding out without a doubt if this is what causes the SIDS Death. Dr. Nigel Kleine, a professor at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children: …

Some Unusual Causes of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS)

There are several causes for SIDS, and more are being discovered each year. Being suffocated by bedding is certainly one of them, as is being rolled on by parents and being a passive infant smoker.

5 Secrets to winning “Good Arguments”

June 26, 2008

What is an Argument?  Argument definition: Is a discussion involving conflicting points of view. Deductive Arguments:  if valid, the conclusion follows by necessity. Persuasive Argument: Where the one person or group benefits at the cost of the other. Inductive Argument: If strong, the conclusion is, at best, probably true.

Years of marriage counseling/ Relationship counseling and a successfull second marriage have convinced me that couples do not need to Argue; they need to discuss. Couples need to solve problems, and sometimes they need to agree to disagree. Arguments are destructive, a dynamic that does not help a discussion. Although relationships do need to breath, sweat and grow to develop just like any other kind of living organism.

If you have energy to create a scene, you have more than enough energy to keep it civilized and productive by having a discussion instead. However, because social expectations and learnt behaviors are so strong, many of my clients want rules for healthy discussions  Here are some rules that may be helpful.

Argument Rules:

 1. Remember the point of the fight is to reach a solution and make-up, not to win, be right, or make your partner wrong. In the middle of a fight try saying “OK your right I’m wrong” (Edward De Bono)

 2. Do not try to read their minds. Ask instead what he or she is thinking. As one person thinks one thing, the other thinks another and guess what? Your both wrong. Practise Open, Honest, Communication.

3.Do not Dredge! Do not bring up previous problems that may or may not relate to this one. Leave the past in the past; keep to the current problem. Solve one thing at a time.

4.Keep it simple. State your problem clearly, suggest some alternatives, and try to choose a solution together. Compromise.

5.Do not talk over each other. Do not talk too much at once. Keep your statements to two or three sentences. Your partner will not be able to grasp more than that.

I will convey more hints, tips and secrets to healthy arguing in subsequent posts.

What is Seperation Anxiety?

June 25, 2008

Separation anxiety disorder almost always occurs in children. It is suspected in children who are excessively anxious about separation from important family members.

Some or all of the following symptoms would be evident for at least 4 weeks:

1. Extreme distress from either anticipating or actually being away from home or being separated from a parent.

2. Extreme worry about losing or about possible harm befalling a loved one

3. Intense worry about getting lost, being kidnapped, or otherwise separated from loved ones

4. Frequent refusal to go to school or to sleep away from home

5. Physical symptoms such as headache, stomach ache, or even vomiting, when faced with separation from loved ones

Separation anxiety often disappears as the child grows older, but if not addressed, it may lead to panic disorder, agoraphobia, or combinations of anxiety disorders.

Separation Anxiety?

I thought the separation anxiety is supposed to get better at 18 month. Well, sometimes it seems better but sometimes it seems worse. Once in a while, Abby would cry out “ma ma” in distress voice and act like she is about to cry.

Fear and stress reactions are essential for human survival. They enable people to pursue important goals and to respond appropriately to danger. In a healthy individual, the stress response (fight, fright, or flight) is provoked by a genuine threat or challenge and is used as a spur for appropriate action.

Separation Anxiety at 4 years old??

I just wonder what sort of effect me bailing on her is having on her poor little mental state and motherly bond. I get the anxiety when there is a change and she is just starting a new routine, but we have been doing this same thing for…

Mom Separation Anxiety

This weekend I will be going on a retreat and will be away from my dear little one basically from Friday afternoon to Sunday Afternoon. It will be the first time I am away from her and I know I will miss her so much.

The word is derived from the Latin, angere, which means to choke or strangle.

Wimbledon 2008

June 24, 2008

Maybe you can remember Wimbledon coverage and jon mcenroe many explosive anger outbursts. He coined the catchphrase “You cannot be serious!” Which was directed toward an umpire during a match at Wimbledon in 1981. I remember watching Wimbledon in disbelief as this sportsman behaved very aggressively in front of thousands of viewers. Whatever your opinions are on this topic lots of people found it was both embarrassing and entertaining.

Watch this video

The one time angry John McEnroe has volunteered to give Andy Murray some anger management training during Wimbledon.

As the player who entertained us with his outbursts and aggressive on-court behavior three decades ago, a now-reformed McEnroe has offered to advise Scotland’s world number 11.

“He probably should give me a call and I might be able to help,” McEnroe told British media.

The American claimed that his famed anger and rages at umpire was “positive” while that of Murray “bring negativity. He does need to figure out a way to use his feelings more positively.”

Murray’s trademark loud swearing on court at hot moments has not gone unnoticed, but the 21-year-old says he won’t be changing a thing to please the public.

Murray is apparently feeling the weight of the nation on his shoulder as the lone British hope for even a second-week showing at Wimbledon

McEnroe said he would be keen to have a fatherly chat with Murray. “I would talk to him about it although I have a son older than him so maybe there’s a generation gap”.

Call it Karma

June 23, 2008

Quotes on Karma not by a Buddha monk but by an Actress ‘Sharon Stone’ and a Senior Pastor ‘John Hagee’. How can they define karma? Who knows their Karma, my Karma, every body’s Karma. What is the definition of karma?

The philosophical explanation of karma can differ slightly between traditions, but the general concept is basically the same. Through the law of karma, the effects of all deeds actively create past, present, and future experiences, thus making one responsible for one’s own life, and the pain and joy it brings to him/her and others. The results or ‘fruits’ of actions are called karma-phala. In religions that incorporate reincarnation, karma extends through one’s present life and all past and future lives as well. Simply put Cause and effect.

Back in the 1960s, social psychologist Melvin Lerner coined the term “just world hypothesis” to describe the tendency to see the fortunate as deserving of good fortune while victims of misfortune are seen as deserving their fate. Lerner summarized 15 years of research into this phenomenon in his 1980 book, the belief in a just world: A fundamental Delusion. In his book, Lerner offers considerable evidence that after initially experiencing pangs of sympathy for those who are suffering, there is a tendency to develop negative views of persons who are suffering.

Both Sharon and John have given us their examples of world hypothesis, based on world catastrophes. Hagee claimed that Hurricane Katrina was God’s retribution for a planned “homosexual parade” in New Orleans and, now, Sharon Stone speculates that the victims of the recent Chinese earthquake could be experiencing the effects of Karma.“I’m not happy about the way the Chinese are treating the Tibetans because I don’t think anyone should be unkind to anyone else,” Stone said during a Cannes Film Festival red-carpet interview with Hong Kong’s Cable Entertainment News. “And then this earthquake and all this stuff happened, and then I thought, is that karma? When you’re not nice that the bad things happen to you?”
