Unlicensed Therapists Targeted:

Apparently on Thursday 09.04.09 The Oregon House authorized legislation aimed at protecting Oregonians from unlicensed therapists and counselors.

The legislation currently named ‘The House Bill 2506’ works in multiple ways.

It prevents professional counselors and marriage and family therapists (MFT) from practicing without state licenses.

It also bans mental health professionals from working if their licenses have been revoked.

The House Bill applied a similar legislation in 2007 and in 2008, only to see the idea stop once it got to the Senate.

A source said: Last time there was a lot of hard feelings, but they seemed to have worked through all of that.
Last year’s legislation was revitalized after Oregonian House reported a escape route in the state law that allows mental health counselors and family therapists to practice, even after their licenses had been revoked by the state. Oregon also allows anyone to practice, untrained and unlicensed, if they call themselves “counselors” or “therapists.”

If it keeps our clients safe and validates our profession then it can’t be all that bad can it?
